On recent episode of his show, Dr. Oz dubbed edible seeds the “power plants of nutrition” and urged his audience, “You should have shelves of them in your pantry.”  One seed in particular that has Dr. Oz buzzing: flaxseed.

The doctor’s fondness for flax isn’t surprising given the study backed slimming agents it contains.  As he revealed, “It gives you healthy fat that satiates your appetite and gets rid of belly fat.” Harvard University scientists agree, crediting flax’s poly unsaturated fats and fiber with the results they observed in a 12-week study:  Subjects who added 3 to 4 Tbs. to their daily diet dropped 37 percent more weight with than those who didn’t eat the seed.

 Better still, natural plant estrogens in flaxseed called lignans target the midlife hormonal flux that causes belly fat to creep on with age – a problem Dr. Oz ranked as the “all-time biggest body complaint for women over 40.” How lignans work:  Estrogen is metabolized in the liver to form two hormonally active substances – one of these is linked to obesity while the other has fat-burning effects, explains Holly Lucille, N.D., R.N.  “Research indicates that flaxseed’s lignans shift the metabolism of estrogen in the direction of the fat burners, “ Lucille notes.  “It’s particularly important during perimenopause and menopause, when changes in estrogen balance can contribute to fat accumulation.”  In fact, lab mice in a recent study that were fed a lignan – enriched diet for four weeks ended up with 32 percent less abdominal fat then their “no lignan” counterparts.

1.  Mix together all of the dry dough ingredients (the salt, yeast, baking soda, flour and sugar).

2.  In another bowl, beat the eggs and mix in the buttermilk and water.

3.  Slowly mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.

4.  Add in the butter spread and mix with a paddle until everything is well combined.

5.  Use the kneading hook attachment on your mixer to knead our the dough for about 15 minutes.  You could technically do this by hand as well, but who has the patience for that? At least it would build up your arm muscles though and burn some calories to make room for the cinnamon rolls!

6.  Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it sit in your fridge for 5-6 hours so that it doubles in size.

7.  Using your hands and a rolling pin, make the dough into a rectangle that is about 20? by 22? in size.

8.  Place 1/2 cup of the butter spread over the rectangular shaped dough, leaving 1? of dough at the bottom without anything on it.

9.  Mix together the filling by combining the cinnamon, cornstarch, and brown sugar.  Place the filling on top of the dough, again leaving 1? of dough at the bottom with nothing on it.

10.  Use your rolling pin to flatten out the filling on top of the dough.

11.  Use your hands to tightly roll the dough, starting at the top, and stretching as you work your way down.  You should get in about 5 rotations before you reach the bottom of the dough.

12.  Before you roll up the entire cinnamon roll dough, use a pastry brush to put a little bit of water on the 1? portion of dough at the bottom that you left empty.

13.  Use a knife to cut the dough in half and then to cut 5 cinnamon rolls from each half, so you are left with a total of 10 cinnamon rolls.

14.  Put 6 cinnamon rolls in a 9×13 baking dish that is covered with parchment paper.  Then repeat, but place the 4 remaining rolls in a 9×9 dish (also covered with parchment paper).

15.  Put the cinnamon rolls into your oven with a separate bowl of boiling water.  They should grow in size until they touch one another in about 1 hour.

16.  Preheat your oven to 350 degrees (or 325 if you have a convection oven), and bake the rolls for 16-20 minutes or until they are a golden brown color.  If you have a food thermometer, you can also check that the inside of the rolls are between 170 degrees and 175 degrees.  Also, don’t forget to turn your baking dishes around 180 degrees in the middle.

17. As the dough bakes, you should start making the cinnamon roll frosting.  Mix together the  cream cheese, butter spread, vanilla extract, salt and lemon extract until it is a light consistency.  Slowly add the powdered sugar until it is combined and then mix it on high for 30 seconds.

18.  As soon as the rolls are done baking, ice them with the frosting.

Doctor Oz passed around the finished product to several hungry audience members. (This is one time I would’ve loved to sit in the front row!)

Low Calorie Pizza Recipe 0

This is Dr. Dow’s Pizza Recipe from his treat food addition diet. You may have seen him on the Dr. Oz show. He created a diet plan to help cure food addiction. Most of the foods found in supermarkets today are causing weight gain and obesity rates to rise due to an over abundance of processed foods. Processed foods contain chemicals and preservatives and are stripped of most of their nutrients and vitamins. And research has shown that these processed foods are addictive and unsatisfying, so in most cases we find ourselves eating more in an effort to feel satisfied. This leads to an overdose of calories and weight gain. Eating real food again can really change your life – start with this pizza recipe and slowly incorporate other real food meals.

It really makes a difference those processed foods that you once craved will diminish. You will have a whole new appreciation for food “that is real food” what a concept.

Dr. Dows Pizza Recipe (treat food addiction diet): Enjoy!

 

Ingredients

1 whole wheat tortilla

1/2 can of strained diced tomatoes

2 to 3 handfulls of low-fat goat cheese crumbles

2 chopped artichokes (or your favorite booster vegetable)

1 onion, sliced and caramelized

Oregano, garlic, basil and rosemary to taste

 

Directions

Cut up your favorite booster vegetables; in this case, slice artichokes and caramelized onions. Spread out the diced tomatoes and low-fat cheese crumbles on the whole wheat tortilla. Then add the artichoke and caramelized onion. Finally, sprinkle the pizza with rosemary, oregano, garlic and basil to taste. Cook in the oven for around 15 minutes at 350° F until the cheese is melted to your desired consistency.
